Wie geht es Ihnen?
Wie geht es dir?
Wie geht’s?
Wie geht es euch?
- Danke, gut – Gut, danke.
Sehr gut.
Es geht.
Nicht so gut.
By far, the most common way to express an emotion in German is to use ich bin, which means “I am”. Just like in English, all you have to do is add any adjective in front of it!
- Ich bin aufgeregt – I’m excited.
- Ich bin ausgeglichen – I feel balanced.
- Ich bin beschäftigt – I’m busy.
- Ich bin besorgt – I’m worried.
- Ich bin eifersüchtig – I’m jealous.
- Ich bin erschrocken – I’m frightened.
- Ich bin geduldig. (I’m patient.)
- Ich bin glücklich – I’m happy.
- Ich bin in Eile – I’m in a hurry.
- Ich bin launisch. (I’m moody.)
- Ich bin müde – I’m tired.
- Ich bin nervös – I’m nervous.
- Ich bin neugierig. (I’m curious.)
- Ich bin optimistisch. (I’m optimistic.)
- Ich bin ruhig – I’m calm.
- Ich bin sauer. – I’m angry.
- Ich bin traurig – I’m sad.
- Ich bin überrascht – I’m surprised.
- Ich bin verblüfft – I’m amazed.
- Ich bin verliebt – I’m in love.
- Ich bin wütend – I’m furious.
- Ich bin zufrieden – I’m content.
- Ich bin sehnsüchtig nach dir. (I’m longing for you.)
- Ich bin etwas griesgrämig. (I’m a little grumpy.)
- Ich bin doch nicht griesgrämig! (I’m not grouchy!)
- Ich schäme mich – I’m embarrassed.
- Ich bin bei Laune. (I’m in the mood/a good mood.)
- Ich bin nicht gut gelaunt. (I’m not in a good mood.)
- Ich bin schlecht gelaunt. (I’m in a rotten mood.)
- Ich bin so unglücklich! – I am so unhappy.
- Ich bin voll down. (I’m totally down.)
- Ich war total baff! (I was totally perplexed, astounded!)
- Du bist so negativ. (You’re so negative.)
- “Du gehst mir tierisch auf den Keks” is a great idiom to express frustration with someone! Or how about “Du hast wohl den Arsch offen,” or “You plainly have the a** open,” really meaning you’re out of your mind/unreasonable.
Some feelings are better expressed using Mir ist rather than Ich bin, and that will largely depend on set phrases rather than logic. You’ll get used to them as you practice listening more often. It starts becoming natural after a while! Be careful: sometimes the difference between using Mir ist… or Ich bin… can be staggering! For example, saying Mir ist langweilig means something is making you bored, while Ich bin langweilig means you’re the boring person in the room! Similarly, by saying Mir ist peinlich you mean you’re embarrassed, but saying Ich bin peinlich means you’re the one who’s embarrassing.
- Mir ist ganz elend. (I’m completely miserable.)
- Mir ist heiss (It is hot to me)
- Mir ist langweilig. (I’m bored.)
- Mir ist peinlich. (I’m embarrassed.)
- Mir ist übel. – I feel sick.
Mir geht’s… literally translates to “it goes to me…” and is often used to talk about how you’re doing. When somebody asks you what you’ve been up to or how you’ve been lately, you can reply using:
- Mir geht’s gut. – literally “It goes to me good”, which means “I’m doing well”.
- Mir geht’s super! – literally “It goes to me super!”, which means “I’m doing very well!”
- Mir gehts tip-top! (I feel tip-top/great!)
- Es geht so. – Not too bad, doing okay.
Ich fühle mich… literally means “I feel myself”. However, this expression won’t make sense in German unless you add adjectives in front of it. Might not be very logical in English, but in German it’ll be crucial if you plan on talking about your state of mind!
- Ich fühle mich einsam. – I feel lonely.
- Ich fühle mich elend. – I feel awful.
- Ich fühle mich euphorisch. (I feel euphoric.)
- Ich fühle mich gut. – I feel good.
- Ich fühle mich krank I feel ill
- Ich fühle mich lebendig – I feel alive.
- Ich fühle mich toll I feel great
- Ich fühle mich wohl I feel comfortable
- “Ich fühle mich (I feel)… gut, schlecht, froh, traurig (good, bad, happy, sad)” will get your point across to start.
- Furthermore, you’ll almost never go wrong using “Ich fühle mich/mir geht’s (I’m feeling/I’m)” with most adjectives.
You’re also good using “Ich habe (I have)… Durst, Kummer, Heimweh (thirst, worry, homesickness)” with a noun.
- Ich habe Angst!
- Ich habe Bauchschmerzen I have a tummyache
- Ich habe Durst I have thirst
- Ich habe echt Fracksausen! (I’m really terrified!)
- Ich habe ein seltsames Gefühl. – I have a strange feeling.
- Ich habe Geduld. (I have patience.)
- Ich habe heute gute Laune. – I am in a good mood today.
- Ich habe Hunger I have hunger
- Ich habe Kopfschmerzen I have a headache
- Ich habe Ruckenschmerzen I have back pain
- Ich habe Schmerzen I have pain
- Ich habe Sehnsucht nach Eis. (I’m craving ice cream.)
- Ich habe Sorgen. (I’m worried.)
You can even resort to “Ich finde das (I find that)… falsch, richtig (wrong, right).
Adverbs
Take the intensity one higher and add a juicy adverb into the mix like echt, voll, total, komplett (really, full/fully, totally, completely): “Ich bin echt begeistert!”
